Coming to a marketer near you: Brain scanning

And if anyone should know that, it would be Dan Rather, who bought his way to network stardom by reporting that the Zapruder film had shown that John Kennedy’s head « went forward with considerable violence » from the gunshot supposedly fired by Lee Oswald from the rear. Years later, Jim Garrison’s case against CIA agent Clay Shaw would drag the Zapruder film into the public eye, which confirmed that Kennedy’s head was driven backwards, not forwards.

Study: Web news readers have greater attention span
People who use the Internet to read the news have a greater attention span than print readers, according to a U.S. study that refutes the idea that Web surfers jump around and don’t read much.
Said idea being a favorite fairy tale of the mainstream media.
Note to advertisers: this suggests that net surfers who see your ad on the net are more likely to retain the ad in their memory than those who see the same ad in the newspaper or on TV. This actually makes sense. It takes far more intelligence to use a computer than to pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV.

Where have all the viewers gone?
« We let them get out of the habit of watching television a little bit, and it’s going to take some time to get these people back in front of their television sets, » said David Poltrack, chief researcher for CBS (owned by CBS Corp.).
Dear totally clueless idiot.
Your former viewers are NOT in the garden.
Your former viewers are NOT playing softball.
Your former viewers are NOT abducted by aliens.
Your former viewers are happy and healthy and sitting right here reading blogs like this one BECAUSE YOUR FORMER VIEWERS DO NOT LIKE BEING LIED TO, and THAT is why they are turning off their TV sets.

Internet UNder Attack
The UN wishes to end U.S. control of the Internet, and at the same time silence many who oppose its agenda of world governance. At the 2006 World Summit on the Information Society, the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) was created as a permanent standing body. The Internet of today is run by a non-governmental organization, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which has the task of managing the assignment of domain names and IP addresses. They do not decide who can and cannot access the Internet, and there is a genuine fear that shifting ICANN control over to the UN could facilitate censorship of the web.

Uncle Sam’s cyber force wants you
Recently, while I was on a visit to Salon.com, my computer screen momentarily went black. A glitch? A power surge? No, it was a pop-up ad for the US Air Force, warning me that an enemy cyber attack could come at any moment – with dire consequences for my ability to connect to the Internet. It was an Outer Limits moment. Remember that eerie sci-fi show from the early 1960s? The one that began in a blur with the message, « There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission … » It felt a little like that.
Pentagon setting up war information rooms
The Pentagon dismissed suggestions that the communications desk will be a message machine or propaganda tool, and instead said it is being set up to gather and distribute information from eight time zones away in a more efficient and timely manner.
« I would not characterize it as a war room, » Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said Friday. « It’s far less sinister than that. It’s more like a library. »
« …..More like a library »????
Forgive me, Mr. Morell, but this alleged « communications desk » will be more like a library when pigs fly.
The problem the pentagon – and this administration – has about the net has been perceptual.
From the beginning of the net, there has been a massive underestimation of its role in vetting real, straight news, right from the source, 24/7.
And no matter how much this war information room tries to spin the surge as anything more positive than a catastrophic disaster, it cannot stop the availably of information coming to anyone who is really interested in knowing what’s going on in Baghdad, or anywhere else in the world.
Pentagon: The internet needs to be dealt with as if it were an enemy « weapons system ».
The Pentagon’s Information Operations Roadmap is blunt about the fact that an internet, with the potential for free speech, is in direct opposition to their goals. The internet needs to be dealt with as if it were an enemy « weapons system ».
In other words, the state reserves to itself the right to lie with impunity to the people.

Search Google, Click to Massive Malware Attacks?
A large-scale, coordinated campaign to steer users toward malware-spewing Web sites from Google search results is under way, security researchers said Tuesday.
Users searching Google with any of hundreds of legitimate phrases — from the technical « how to cisco router vpn dial in » to the heart-tugging « how to teach a dog to play fetch » — will see links near the top of the results listings that lead directly to malicious sites hosting a mountain of malware. « This is huge, » said Alex Eckelberry, Sunbelt Software’s CEO. « So far we’ve found 27 different domains, each with up to 1,499 [malicious] pages. That’s 40,000 possible pages. »

Pentagon Propaganda Pundits
As posts on this site by Katrina vanden Heuvel and Ari Melber outline, yesterday’s New York Times’ front-page piece convincingly exposed the Pentagon’s propaganda machine, its control over access and information, and its selling of the « war on terror » — beginning with the buildup to the Iraq war. David Barstow’s excellent reporting also underscored the complicity of the major media.

Pentagon Panel: U.S. Must Sell ‘Good News’
« The strategic communication problem is to make good news as entertaining as bad news, » says a new report by the Defense Science Board, a senior-level Pentagon advisory panel that normally looks at science and technology issues.
Memo to the board members who collaborated on this report: spin as you might, continue to polish that turn called propaganda, but this will be all to no avail.
In the day of instant communication via the net, anything you try to cover up will ultimately be exposed by logical people who can look data, and decide what the truth is for themselves.
The atrocities at Abu Ghraib, want happened in Faluja, the complete destruction of Iraq’s and Afghanistan’s infrastructure is a matter of record.
We cannot convince people around the world to like us by « crafting the right messages ». They can see the profound difference between what we say (as in, the US doesn’t torture) and what we do (yes, we torture), and the information is instantly accessible in millions of hands.
What this country needs to become a relevant, non-bullying voice again in world affairs is not an « image makeover », but a « morality makeover » .
What this means is that this country, geopolitically, actually practices what it preaches at every level of national policy.
We talk a good game about human dignity, freedom, human rights, and democracy
It’s the fact that we don’t abide by those values, in dealing with other countries, that stinks.

Fake News and Propaganda: Shaping Our Reality
The mainstream media is dominated by a handful of mega corporations who control what many of us hear, read, and believe. The propaganda masters are censoring and suppressing the truth from the American people. There are many reporters who know the truth but dare not talk or write about it, and what some report they don’t even believe themselves. Those who are courageous enough to stand up to the establishment are often ridiculed, intimidated, and blocked by editors and producers who are acting as gatekeepers to the truth. There have been calls for the arrests and even death of those who criticize the government. You know you have slipped into a fascist dictatorship when those who dissent are treated like traitors, terrorists, and enemies of the state. We are being brainwashed with all the propaganda that we are subjected to in our everyday lives in an effort to control our minds and shift us into massive groupthink. We are being told that we are spreading democracy around the world while our own freedoms are being systematically taken away.
Home Front ‘Surge’
The content of the ads – four of them, so far – is so completely dishonest that one wonders what the producers were thinking: do they really imagine the American people are going to swallow another round of complete fabrications?
In a disgusting display of mendacity not seen since the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, a pro-war advertising campaign spearheaded by former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer is buying $15 million worth of 30-second television spots that repeat the lies linking 9/11 to Iraq – and explicitly threatening another terrorist attack in the US if we « surrender. » It’s the first storm in a season of fear.
Glenn Beck – Professional Jackass
Every now and then we win.
CNN – and in this pointed case Glenn Beck – likes to paint itself as a reliable, unbiased source of news.
For an « unbiased source » then do seem to have tremendous enthusiasm for promoting wars.
Could that have anything to do with the fact that Lockheed Martin pays its bills?
Media analyst Norman Solomon sucker punches professional jackass Glenn Beck with the facts. Watch Beck squirm.
What I wouldn’t pay to hear the transmission from the control room to Beck’s head phones as the news director – those nameless invisible creeps who control what we see on TV news – tries impotently to blunt Solomon’s point.
This is probably the last time Norman Solomon will appear live on CNN, but I say it was worth it.
Watch it, enjoy it and pass it on.
The truth made it to TV…for a few minutes as least.

State-Worshiping AP News Agency Reports
« Neutral » or « objective » news agencies like AP and Reuters, on the other hand, typically operate by certain long-standing traditions and rules. They’re not supposed to express their political opinion or taint fact with opinion if it is not an Op-Ed or editorial. They should relate the story and not paint it with gratuitous content. They should not try to make a story fair and balanced. They should report the news as it went down. And they usually do.
Sort of.
They have clever ways of bending the rules to benefit one side–usually « the state, » e.g., the USA or Israel or Great Britain. AP does it to perfection. In a short March 7 report titled « Israeli Warplanes Fly Over Beirut, » the news giant uses the typical corporate media tools of omission and selective context to misinform the reader, but also employs creative quoting and extraneous content to further marginalize the source and tacitly apologize for the state’s wrongdoing.

Secret mailing list rocks Wikipedia
Controversy has erupted among the encyclopedia’s core contributors, after a rogue editor revealed that the site’s top administrators are using a secret insider mailing list to crackdown on perceived threats to their power.
Many suspected that such a list was in use, as the Wikipedia « ruling clique » grew increasingly concerned with banning editors for the most petty of reasons. But now that the list’s existence is confirmed, the rank and file are on the verge of revolt.
Long time readers will recall that I myself had an entry at Wikipedia, which contained factual errors that would be re-inserted after I repeatedly corrected them. Then I was blocked from being able to correct my own entry with the explanation that I was « not qualified » to edit an entry about myself. When WRH readers complained, my entry was simply deleted along with the entry fore whatreallyhappened.com.
With the emergence of this mailing list, it should be clear that far from being an expression of democratic information flow, wikipedia is just as controlled as ABCNNBBCBS.
SELF-CENSORSHIP OR LOBBY INTIMIDATION?
“America On Line is the most egregious in stifling Internet freedom. A former AOL employee noted how AOL and other Internet Service Providers cooperate with the Bush administration in censoring email. The Patriot Act gave federal agencies the power to review information to the packet level and AOL was directed by agencies like the FBI to do more than sniff the subject line. The AOL term of service (TOS) has gradually been expanded to grant AOL virtually universal power regarding information. Many AOL users are likely unaware of the elastic clause, which says they will be bound by the current TOS and any TOS revisions which AOL may elect at any time in the future. Essentially, AOL users once agreed to allow the censorship and non-delivery of their email.”

GOOGLE’S ‘ROBOTS’ UNMASKED
In Google’s continuing attempt to silence the pro-Palestinian community on the Blogesphere, they have been claiming that it is ‘Robots’ that are locking blogs, not actual people. In a post I wrote yesterday I countered that claim with the charge that it is a well organised cell of zionists at work.

IS BIG BROTHER HACKING INTO THE INTERNET?
As more people become ‘Netsavvy’, the powers that be have become ‘Netcensors’. We see this happening on a daily basis as we watch Websites get shut down, Websites blacklisted, and now the newest ‘game’ of hacking Websites.
The latter has become a favourite game of the zionists in recent weeks, hacking into the Websites that speak the truth. Two recent examples of this mischievous activity are What Really Happened and Tikkun Magazine. Both had their mailing lists hacked and subscribers received most annoying emails from them.
US Dept of Justice IP address blocked after ‘vandalism’ edits to Wikipedia
Wikinews has learned that a United States Department of Justice (DOJ) IP Address has been blocked on Wikipedia after making edits to an article which were considered « vandalism ». In two separate instances, the IP address from the DOJ removed information from the Wikipedia article about the organization Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA), regarding an attempt by the organization to secretly gain influence on the site. The IP address has been confirmed by Wikinews to be registered and used by the DOJ located in Washington, D.C.

Stephen King “let’s waterboard Jenna Bush”
Strange quotes to read in a prominent magazine like Time, but they are very powerful words. Stephen King, in an interview about his upcoming film “Mist”, brought up the issue of real vs. fake news. He can’t stand the fact that Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan flood our news with their “trailer trash” lifestyles, while serious world events are taking place and receiving no coverage.
It's headline news today that some people
are outraged by Hilary Clinton's reference
to the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.
The current clamor is remarkable especially
when you consider the following three real
outrages.
The US news media:
1. Has never shown any interest in getting to
the bottom of who killed Robert F. Kennedy.
Instead they repeat the preposterous story that
he was shot in the back of the head at close range
by someone ten feet in front of him.
2. They never refer to what he stood for including
his opposition to the Vietnam war, his skepticism about
the need for the US to support Israel, and his intention
to continue his brother's work.
3. And they never, never comment on Kennedy's
positive legacy.
In these three ways, the US news media continues the
work of the 1968 assassins whose mission was to silence
Kennedy and remove his ideas from debate.
Part of a man's legacy are his children.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. - RFK's son - is an informed,
insightful, well-spoken - and very effective -
environmental and political activist.
How often do you see him on US news programs? How
often is he asked for his opinions on talk shows?
Just about never.
There's a reason for that.

FLASHBACK: The Iraqi tanks that were not there
Satellite photographs taken by the Soviet Union on the precise day Bush addressed Congress failed to show any evidence of Iraqi troops in Kuwait or massing along the Kuwait-Saudi Arabian border. While the Pentagon was claiming as many as 250,000 Iraqi troops in Kuwait, it refused to provide evidence that would contradict the Soviet satellite photos. U.S. forces, encampments, aircraft, camouflaged equipment dumps, staging areas and tracks across the desert can easily be seen. But as Peter Zimmerman, formerly of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in the Reagan Administration, and a former image specialist for the Defense Intelligence Agency, who analyzed the photographs said:
We didn’t find anything of that sort [i.e. comparable to the U.S. buildup] anywhere in Kuwait. We don’t see any tent cities, we don’t see congregations of tanks, we can’t see troop concentrations, and the main Kuwaiti air base appears deserted. It’s five weeks after the invasion, and from what we can see, the Iraqi air force hasn’t flown a single fighter to the most strategic air base in Kuwait. There is no infrastructure to support large numbers of people. They have to use toilets, or the functional equivalent. They have to have food…. But where is it?
As the Bushling and his Neocons try to sell us another war, it is worth recalling the scandal over photos shown by the Us Government during the run-up to Desert Storm.
The photos in question purported to show massed Iraqi tanks on the border with Saudi Arabia. But Russian satellite photos of the same region on the same day showed nothing but empty desert, and photos from a commercial satellite purchased by a Florida newspaper confirmed it.

Fortunatetly, the EFF has another argument likely to carry some sway in Europe: the shadow of totalitarian spy services. This sort of powerful, intrusive filtering, set loose across most of Europe, also has huge potential for abuse. « Any country that has a centralized system in place to pry into all its citizen’s private communications, » says the EFF’s Danny O’Brien, « and then preemptively sever those which it deems ‘unsuitable,’ creates both a very disturbing precedent, and a dangerously powerful tool vulnerable to misuse. »

New top-level internet addresses come with $100,000-plus price tag
A new era in the way websites are named was ushered in this evening when the governing body for internet domain names announced a massive liberalisation.
At a meeting in Paris, the body that oversees the internet’s structure set in motion a « land grab » for new web addresses. People will now be able to apply for any top level domain name but it will cost at least $100,000 to do so.

Debunking NY Post’s Tabloid Hit Piece On Sheen/O’Donnell
We Hear . . . Stern Questions
Stern, a longtime freelance contributor to the Post’s “Page Six,” was accused by billionaire Ron Burkle of trying to extort $200,000 from him in exchange for keeping negative stories about him out of the paper. Now the “Page Six” editor, Richard Johnson, has been contacted for questioning by a group that includes prosecutors from the Southern District and federal agents.
TOP STORYNew York Post Hit Piece On Sheen & O’Donnell (and yours truly)
Matt Rivero? The New York Post can’t even get my name right, then proceed to claim to sit in judgment on Charlie Sheen and Rosie O’Donnell?
What is very obvious is that the New York Post wrote this panic-stricken hit piece without even bothering to visit my website where it says in gold type at the very top, « Michael Rivero’s What Really Happened. » It’s up there now, above where you are reading this. Go ahead and look. I’ll wait.
So, Richard Johnson, Paula Froelich, Bill Hoffmann, and Corynne Steindler all decided that my theory of the collapse of WTC-7 was « debunked », and not one of them, NOT ONE OF THEM, actually visited my website to find out what that theory really was.
Employees Expose FOX NEWS Distortions
« As Rupert Murdoch’s ‘war on journalism’ hits new lows, droves of disgruntled employees are confessing their many misdeeds, brought upon by the systematic oppression they faced at FOX News. Watch how FOX executives dictate their bias by forcing reporters to follow memos that predetermine « what they could say and how they could say it. »
FOX News: « Fair and balanced » because they say so!
Rupert Murdoch has decided that the best approach to journalism is to parade opinions dressed-up as News. The reason is simple: No one can disprove an opinion, and therefore, credibility is easier to maintain. Should they ever get caught lying, the legal process affords them protection under the First Amendment. All this, thanks in part to Congress who had the bright idea of passing a rider(hidden) Bill to deregulate the News Media. That’s right, Corporate News entities can tell lies and distort the news if they so choose, and it’s all perfectly legal.
To the best of my knowledge, no country can have or maintain democracy without an honest Press or, at least, one that can be held accountable. But where is ours?
Not convinced? « Florida Appeals Court ruled that there is absolutely nothing illegal in a major media organization lying, concealing or distorting information »: http://www.netfeed.com/~jhill/RupertM…
